Roots of Excellence
Community Montetessori
The First Campus of a Global Pan-African Montessori school system for our community, rooted in culture, excellence, and inspired learning.
Powered by early childhood developmental research.
Why Roots of Excellence COMMUNITY MONTESSORI
Roots of Excellence Community Montessori is the first Pan-African Montessori school in Jackson Ward, Richmond, Virginia. We teach children to farm, build, calculate, and create through the lens of African intellectual tradition, from infancy through elementary. This is rigorous, identity-affirming education rooted in the science, mathematics, and culture African people have always produced.
Mural Wall
Safety, Visibility, Neigbhorhood Impact, Legacy
Renowned Jackson Ward artist Sir James Thornhill will transform ROECM’s brick fence into a bold visual anchor that honors African history, Black legacy, and the spirit of Jackson Ward. Children will help bring it to life, turning the wall into a living classroom where art, safety, pride, and intergenerational storytelling meet.
Open the Doors to the First Classroom

In this first 3–6 classroom, children will begin their journeys in a warm, environment designed by educators who are passionate about the development of Black children and families across the diaspora. Here, rigorous, science-backed early childhood education thrives through the beauty of both local and global African culture, giving our youngest learners a place to think, build, question, and belong from their very first school experience.
